First Grade

1st Grade Team


In First Grade students are learning to become independent readers and building on many of the skills that they learned in kindergarten.

English Language Arts

  • Retell stories, including key details that help demonstrate understanding of the central message.
  • Explain major differences between books that tell stories and those that give information.
  • Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables and sounds.
  • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
  • Write simple sentences.
  • Use digital tools to produce written products.

Math

  • Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20 by using objects, drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
  • Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend (an unknown number added to another) problem. For example: “Subtract 10 ‒ 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.”
  • Relate counting to addition and subtraction.
  • Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. Read and write numbers that represent a number of objects.
  • Use multiple strategies to add and subtract within 20.
  • Fluently add and subtract within 10.
  • Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.
  • Decompose (take apart) two-digit numbers in multiple ways (e.g., 64 can be decomposed into 6 tens and 4 ones, or 5 tens and 14 ones).
  • Mentally find ten more and ten less than a given number within 100.

Science

  • Earth and Space Science: Recognize that there are more stars in the sky than anyone can easily count. Investigate how magnifiers make things appear bigger. Identify beneficial and harmful properties of the Sun. Recognize that water, rocks, soil, and living organisms are found on Earth’s surface. Quick versus slow change in the natural world.
  • Life Science: Make observations of living things. Living versus nonliving things.
    Identify major parts of plants. Basic needs for survival such as air, water, food and space.
  • Physical Science: Demonstrate and describe how objects move. Sort objects based on whether they sink or float.

Social Studies

  • History is the story of people and events of other times and places.
  • Honoring the heroism and achievements of people, events and our nation’s ethnic heritage.
  • Terms related to the time order of events in school.
  • Rights and responsibilities students have in school.
  • Defining opportunity cost.
  • Describing weather’s effect on the way people live.
